In today’s interconnected world, counseling professionals and people-helpers are increasingly likely to encounter clients from diverse cultural backgrounds, including LGBTQIA+, B40, race, religion and class. Effective counseling in such a context demands a deep understanding of cultural nuances, communication styles, and the ability to build trust and rapport across cultural divides.
This training is designed to equip you with the knowledge, skills, and awareness needed to connect and journey with people in a variety of community settings and through various stages of needs (such as crisis, grief and loss), treatment planning, referral, support and advocacy. Basic theoretical, scriptural and practice issues will be considered, including the need for a balanced approach to counselor’s self-care.
The objectives are to:
- develop an understanding of a variety of cultures, religious perspectives and rituals
- develop an increased knowledge of other worldviews and how these views impact a client’s beliefs and religious behaviors
- use culturally appropriate techniques/responses and develop cultural sensitivity when working with various populations
- exhibit a Biblical/theological perspective that promotes respect for diversity while maintaining a distinctively Christian viewpoint.
Contents include:
- Diversity Issues
- Dimensions of Worldviews
- Overview of Malaysian ethnicities
- Becoming the Culturally-skilled Counsellor
Target audience:
Church staff, lay counsellors, social workers and those who wish to be more effective in walking alongside people from a different cultural background.
