All of us experience painful grief or a sense of loss no matter which stage of life we are at. Relationships are broken, disappointments in school and with church, betrayals in the workplace and the sudden decline of health and the inevitable death of loved ones: these make up the range of normal human experiences. However, very often we are told to move on and not dwell on these painful experiences as if they are not real and we must not be weak.

Hence, many people who experience grief expect to bounce back to normal routine, for example as soon as the funeral is over or the divorce papers signed. They are also pushed to act normal and be happy again by well- meaning friends and family. The fact is sometimes, grievers hide their pain because they think they have to be strong and because they do not want to make others feel uncomfortable that they are taking a longer time to recover. All that time, people around have no idea of the confusion and grief churning inside their hearts. If not dealt properly, this unresolved grief can have negative and long term effects on the happiness of the griever.

• the emotional, physical and psychological effects of grief
• how to help the griever to recover
